Why GraphQL?
In the Bagisto Headless architecture, GraphQL serves as the primary communication bridge between the Next.js frontend and the Laravel backend. This document explores why GraphQL was chosen over traditional REST APIs and the benefits it brings to modern e-commerce development.
1. Efficient Data Fetching
Traditional REST APIs often lead to two common performance bottlenecks: Overfetching and Underfetching.
REST Approach
- Overfetching: To get a product's name, the API might return the entire product object, including descriptions, attributes, and reviews that aren't needed for a simple list view.
- Underfetching: To display a product page, you might need to make three separate calls:
/products/1,/products/1/reviews, and/products/1/related. This increases latency.
GraphQL Approach
With GraphQL, the frontend requests exactly what it needs in a single request.

}2. Strongly Typed Schema
GraphQL uses a typed system to define the data. This provides several advantages:
- Predictability: You know exactly what fields are available and what data type they return (String, Int, Boolean, etc.).
- Validation: Requests are validated against the schema before execution, preventing logic errors.
- Auto-Completion: Tools like Apollo Client provide excellent IDE support and IntelliSense based on the schema.
3. Self-Documenting API
One of the most powerful features of GraphQL is Introspection. This allows developers to query the API for information about its own schema.
- Interactive Tools: You can use tools like GraphQL Playground or GraphiQL to browse the entire API documentation without reading a single PDF or external webpage.
- Instant Testing: You can write and test queries directly in the browser against your live backend.
4. Single Endpoint Architecture
Unlike REST, which requires managing dozens of different URL routes (endpoints), GraphQL uses a single endpoint (usually /graphql).
- Reduced Complexity: No need to keep track of versioning in URLs (e.g.,
/v1/,/v2/). - Unified Security: Authentication and rate limiting can be managed centrally for all data operations.
5. Performance in E-commerce
E-commerce storefronts are data-heavy. GraphQL handles this complexity gracefully:

- Custom Directives: Allows complex logic (like permissions or pagination) to be handled via simple annotations in the schema.
